Bokashi Composting

Take part in a national trial researching the use of Bokashi kitchen digesters at home...

Firstly, thanks for taking the time the time to participate in this trial. The Bokashi method of composting at home is a relatively recent practice and there is little information available reporting the effectiveness of this system, and information from households using these kitchen digesters is especially limited. By using your kitchen digesters and reporting on the results you will be helping in the development of guidelines and advice on the use of Bokashi kitchen digesters.

Your opinions and findings, whether qualitative or quantitative, will be especially interesting to the Sustainable Waste Management Team at Garden Organic because we are currently running a scientific trial involving the Bokashi kitchen digesters, testing various aspects of their performance. We would welcome your thoughts as a valuable addition to our findings, especially because you can tell us how they are performing in real household situations.

Project Objectives

The general objectives are set out below.

  1. 1. To assess the use and effectiveness of the Bokashi concept for treating cooked and uncooked kitchen waste.

  2. 2. To assess the impact of adding material from a Bokashi kitchen digester into a home composting system.

  3. 3. To assess the quality of the compost produced by a home composting system into which has been added material from a Bokashi kitchen digester.

You needn’t complete steps two and three if you would rather not add the contents of the kitchen digesters to your garden compost bins or heaps. Remember that any information you provide us with on any aspect of your experience with the digesters will be useful to us.

Please use the record sheets (you can download the Bokashi trial records sheets here) to make notes of your findings and general thoughts. Don’t worry if you forget to fill in something on the sheets – it is much more important to be honest and record only the things that you know for sure, than to panic and make something up!

If you have any questions at all, or just want to discuss how it’s going, drop me an email.

Happy Bokashi!
