Garden Organic celebrate International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day (IVD) on December 5th was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism.

Garden Organic would like to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank its 500+ volunteer Master Composters nationally for all of their hard work and enthusiasm in promoting the home composting message.  Our Master Composters are a network of active volunteers who support residents to compost.  This helps them to provide a valuable resource for the garden, whilst at the same time each compost bin diverts around 150 kilograms of organic matter from the wast stream every year.

Garden Organic work in partnership with local authorities across the UK to train and support volunteers who encourage people in their local community to start composting at home, and offer support to people who are already home composting and may be having difficulties or need encouragement.

So far this year over 4850 hours have been volunteered by Garden Organic Master Composters, a fantastic achievement which is being celebrated nationwide.

Achievements of the Leicestershire Master Composters (below left) were recognised at a celebration evening with volunteers being awarded certificates for 30 hours volunteering, through to an incredible 1400+ hours.  The Northamptonshire Master Composters (below right) celebrated the years achievements by spending an evening socialising and painting pottery!
