National Volunteer Masters Conference 2014

A happy band of around 150 Master Composters and Master Gardeners from around the country recently convened at Ryton Gardens, Coventry for the annual National Volunteers Masters Conference.
It may have been the glorious weather, it make have been the wormeries, it may have been the cake, but the whole day was as smooth as a well-raked seed bed.
Our wonderful volunteers enjoyed an opening speech by Garden Organic’s head of programmes Margi Lennartsson, complete with her Swedish headdress and new potatoes, but sadly without the famous Swedish Frog Dance. She was followed by Garden Organic chief executive James Campbell before the volunteers got down to some workshops.

Worm composting, growing unusual herbs and spices and green manures were among the subjects covered. And in between the workshops there was plenty of time for delegates to network, swap ideas and just sit in the sun and natter over a cup of tea.
After a delicious lunch from caterers Fresh Rootz it was back to more workshops and a raffle.

The annual conference is a great way for Garden Organic volunteer mentors to share best practice and learn from each other. Judging from all the swapping of emails and phone numbers, many will now be keeping in touch across the networks.

Cutting the Conference cake!
